- THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Lynn Frances Preston composed text for, edited, and directed The Epic of Gilgamesh for Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School in 2022, a shadow puppetry and marionette work that was created by working collaboratively with Kasia Pudlo for its design. The project incorporated some student bookwork, illustrations from previous lessons into the design, giving the students a sense of ownership which influenced the dynamics of the project’s enthusiastic reception. Students were directed to have agency for all puppetry, marionette and shadows puppets, changes of set, characterisation through mask and chorus oration aspects of the performance. The work was enhanced by students’ playing of music as the characters of Gilgamesh and Enkidu travelled forth upon their mythic journey to slay Humbaba, the guardian of the forest and it’s eight protectors. The Gods sought vengeance upon Gilgamesh for this act by orchestrating the death of his soul friend Enkidu, which compelled him in his grief toward a quest to gain immortal life.

Gilgamesh & Enkidu travel forth to slay Humbaba, the guardian of the forest.

Gilgamesh sinks to the bottom of the sea to bring back the plant that will give him strength & vitality until his death.
